Racing in the USA
The list above mixes several series, and they test different things. HYROX is eight 1 km runs, each followed by a workout station, raced indoors; the format is the same worldwide, so US results sit on the same global leaderboards as UK ones. ATHX is one continuous 2.5-hour session across six zones: three workouts (strength, endurance and a MetCon) with warm-up, refuel and recovery zones around them. DEKA is Spartan's indoor series, built on ten exercise zones. Battle Cancer is a fitness fundraising series for teams of four or, in its Hybrid 3|20 format, individuals and pairs; every dollar you raise counts as points on the leaderboard.
Most races use big-city convention centres, and a few use stadium sites: Reliant Park in Houston (formerly NRG Park), where the METRORail Red Line stops right at the complex; State Farm Stadium in Glendale, north-west of central Phoenix; and loanDepot park, the Miami Marlins' baseball stadium. Check the address before booking a hotel. Rosemont's Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, for example, is by O'Hare airport, 20 minutes from central Chicago. Halls can also be far apart. At the Las Vegas Convention Center, walking from the West Hall to the North/Central Hall can take up to 25 minutes, so know your hall before you set off.
Two checks before you book. With DEKA, pick your format with care: DEKA FIT puts a 500 m run before each of the ten zones, 5 km in all against HYROX's 8 km; DEKA MILE uses the same zones with a mile of running in total; and DEKA STRONG has no running at all. And if you're travelling on a British citizen passport, you need an ESTA or a visa to enter the US. US Customs and Border Protection recommends applying as soon as you start planning.
